Rakta Charitra is a biographical tale of Paritala Ravi from Andhra Pradesh, a prime accused in a number of murder cases. It is the story of a man's phenomenal rise to power and a story of the most intense blood curdling conflict ever heard of between two individuals. Moreover, the story is also the ultimate statement on the often heard disastrous consequences of a fatal mixture of caste, crime, family feuds and politics. A killer bandit decides to become a politician in order to avenge deaths in his family. After an impressive yet underrated 'Rann', Ram Gopal Verma is back again with 'Rakhta Charitra'. Having heard that it was based on the rivalry between Paritala Ravindra and Maddela Cheruvu Suryanarayana and given that the director has a knack for crime films (examples include classics like 'Satya' and 'Company'), expectations were reasonably high. While 'Rakhta Charitra' does not overall disappoint, it could have been better.

The film is stylishly shot. However, there were a few instances when I felt the camera-work was too erratic. We know how Verma loves his camera but sometimes he needs to take it easy. The background score too should have been toned down in a few sequences because it brings a melodramatic feel. Ram Gopal Verma's voice-over is quite terrible. While his voice does add some irony to the story, he should have left the task to someone else. There is one song which should have been better left out.

The scenes of violence are well-executed but sometimes it appears as though they overshadow the story. Verma could have developed the story a little more and added a little more personal moments between or within the characters in order to involve the viewer. There are a couple of scenes that are overdone and unintentionally funny but otherwise the atmosphere and tension is well contained.

The casting is excellent. Vivek Oberoi effortlessly pulls off the role of Ravi Pratap. Of course he's played similar characters earlier in 'Company' and 'Shootout at Lokhandwala' and here he does nothing short of a great job. Abhimanyu Singh is equally good as the ruthless menacing Bukka. It's good to see Shatrughan Sinha back in films (this time as the fiery Sivaji Rao). The supporting cast that includes Zarina Wahab, Radhika Apte, Sushmita Mukherjee, Sushant Singh, Ashish Vidyarthi and Ashwini Kalsekar, is superb.

Even though 'Rakhta Charitra' may not be up there with Verma's earlier films like 'Company' or 'Satya', it is an interesting film that is gripping and well-paced. It's good to see Verma going stronger after 'Rann' and hope he keeps up and offers good cinema. I look forward to the sequel. This is the movie, this is only for strong hearted, It was a fabulous one, but a strict NO, NO if you are planning to go with your family, and same applies for girlfriend, because of it's brutality and violence scenes. Vivek Oberoi role has been portrayed excellent from starting, i like the way he dressed as an politician, the Ray Ban Sunglasses and White Safari Suit, OMG, he looks amazing chopstick there, movie has a lot of violence scenes and very rarely seen killing techniques, they chop off people like we cut potatoes and carrots in the kitchen, with knives and cutters, there's hardly any mercy in the movie, i am eager to watch RakhtCharitra-2, releasing on 19th November,2010 in India.

All other characters have performed well and equal chances have been given to each one, i also like the Shatrugan Sinha's come back with clean moustache and the dialogue "Topic is Over !!!",. Bukka's role played by Abhimanyu Shankar Singh, is the most eye-catching, horrifying role of the movie, the way he talks, the way he reacts to things, he just an eye-opener for all.

I give RakhtCharitra a 8/10. Eager to watch RakhtCharitra-2.

Thanks - Amit
